Hey Guys!
So guess who just turned 16 (Three days ago anyways)!? Yaaaay!
It’s honestly so crazy to finally be sixteen. Like all my childhood I thought that being sixteen was going to be one of the funnest times of my life. I thought I’d be all-grown up, rich (ha ha.), wise, pretty, and ‘cool.’ Yeaaaah, okay so like I’m really good at this whole life thing…Ahem.
So out of all of those dreams, the only one that I think I qualify a little bit for is being more ‘wise.’ I mean, I’m no Albert Einstein, but I can definitely say I’ve learnt a thing or two in my short amount of time being alive.
Even those most of these are already topics that people talk about a lot, I know that over the years I’ve personally come to find my own knowledge and experience with them.
So here are 16 things that I’ve learnt in 16 years. I hope you enjoyyyy!
- If you matter to someone, they will make time – This is honestly so damn on point. Like if someone truly does care and love you, they would be able to make time. Sure, everyone uses the excuse of ‘Sorry I’ve been really busy’ but anytime you’ve ever said that, I bet you still were able to slip in a conversation or two with your friend.
- Good grades are hard but important – Until this year, grades didn’t matter to me, even when I got extremely high or extremely low marks. They just didn’t matter. But something changed this year, and now I do care. I care a hell of a lot. And I stress about them a lot. But with that stress I’m able to turn it into motivation to work harder. Marks do matter, and while there are some cases that they aren’t, for the majority they are so important.
- Progress isn’t always physical – Through my fitness journey, I’ve learnt that progress is not always physical, but a lot of the time it’s emotional and mental. People get so caught up trying to achieve that ‘healthy’ body, and they don’t pay attention to the most vital part of being healthy. You need a happy and stable mentality to be healthy.
- Tell people who you love that you love them – I used to be shy about telling people that I love them. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realised that people come and go so fast in this world, so it’s important to tell them while you still have time with them.
- Love yourself – Okay now this one I can definitely say is not an easy one. I still struggle with this everyday. But each time I fight my insecurities, I win a part of me back. As cliche as that sounds, trying to love the parts of yourself that you hate the most is important. You can’t let them take over and have control. You need to be able to be happy with who you are and what you look like.
- Share your emotions with someone – Keeping my emotions to myself is something that I’ve always done. I used to feel really guilty about it, and thought something was wrong with me because all my friends were able to be open and chilled around each other, but I wasn’t. It was up until recently though, that I realised I didn’t have to be guilty about being closed-up. That just added to it. Instead, what I needed was someone who I trusted and who I didn’t have to worry about judging me. And that’s my best friend and my family. My dad, sister (Bethany) and my best friend have helped me so much, and it’s honestly just such a relief to be able to share my stress with someone else.
- God answers prayer – This one has got to be one of the most important lessons that I’ve ever learnt. God does answer prayer. He does answer my prayers. And I’ve seen him do it on a daily basis.
- Make and take opportunities – People say ‘take any opportunity you find.’ But do you know what’s even better than just looking around lost? Making opportunities. Seriously. If you make opportunities I can guarantee you will have more amazing experiences and stories to tell people.
- Being thankful in hard circumstances pays off – As someone who constantly grumbles and complains, this is literally so important for me to remember. I can think of a countless number of times where I was put in a crappy situation but remained thankful and it turned out alright in the end. It was hard, but it seriously does pay off.
- Be honest – The amount of times I used to get caught out for lying was ridiculous. One lie would lead to another, and soon I would get caught in a massive tangle of them. It hurt people I cared about, and it hurt myself. Lying is so wrong, and I’m so glad I’ve gotten better.
- Fitness and eating healthy is worth it – Not only do I feel physically strong and happy when I work out, but I feel emotionally strong and happy. It relieves stress, helps me think better, have a better mood, and overall helps me to just live a much happier life.
- Act now instead of later – Just from personal experience, I’ve found that anytime I’d ever say ‘I’ll do it tomorrow‘ it would either be really rushed and messy or even worse, it would never get done. I’ve learnt to act today and now, instead of tomorrow and later.
- Fear is just a challenge you haven’t beaten yet – I have SO many fears (I made a post about some of there here). And every fear is different and unique from each other. They all have their own issues to overcoming you, and they all have their own solutions for you to overcome them. You just need to keep fighting, and keep looking for it. They’re just challenges that are waiting for you to achieve those three gold stars and to move on .
- Don’t use shy as an excuse to be antisocial – I’m so guilty of this one, oh my gosh.
- You can’t add a single minute to your life by worrying.
- Having one friend is okay – All my life I’ve only really had 1 friend at a time. When I was younger this really bothered me, and I found it really awkward because I thought that meant I was weird or that people didn’t like me. But do you know what I’ve learnt? Having one friend is okay. Having one friend is amazing. Having one friend instead of a billion is important because you need to have at least one person you can rely on and be super close with.
I know this was a really long post, but I’ve just been really super busy packing and getting ready for camp! I leave in about 2 hours, and won’t be back until Saturday the next week. But I’ll definitely post an update of how that went when I get back! 🙂
Hope you guys have a great week. I’ll talk with y’all soon!
Stay Happy & God Bless!
Skye xx.
(P.S Please excuse the grammar and spelling. I ran out of time to edit hehe)
Happy belated Birthday!! These are really wise words. I’m about to turn 17 in six days and I can relate with these wise words of yours, along with your own personal experiences with it. It’s always great to come back and look at the things you’ve grown from, learned from; through personal experiences or point of views. Looking back to my younger days, I wouldn’t have realize that things can change so much. The things that you planned at age five wasn’t the plan at all for age 16 or whatever you planned on doing for every age. But learning through hardships, and gaining insight and wisdom are surely the best.
Have fun camping! Make sure to come back being more inspired. Breathe in the fresh nature air! xD

Happy belated Birthday! I wish you wisdom, knowledge and contentment as you enter into your sixteenth year.
This is such good advice. The only thing I’d learned when turning sixteen is that removing a pot that’s caught fire from the cooker is not a good idea.
Looks like you already have the wisdom front covered. Good for you.
All the best.

Happy belated birthday, mate! Your post on what you’ve learnt is very inspiring and completely astounding! If that’s what you’ve learnt when you hit 16, then you’re already a very wise person, indeed. Therefore, I wish you the best of birthdays to come, the most successful of days, and I pray that God may shower His sweet blessings upon every road that you choose to take. May God smile upon you and may success wrap it’s wide arms around the choices that you make and may your very smile open up a door of infinite possibilities when you have no options to make. Have fun at camp xx
